The Giver by Lois Lowry  

​

Synopsis: The main character, Jonas, a 12 year old boy, is born into a dystopian society that has managed to eliminate war, disease, and sadness from its community. Through a series of events he comes to realize that creativity, identity, and choice have also been eliminated. Jonas struggles with his new found knowledge and must choose how he wants to act on it.

parent note: There are some mature themes in the novel, however nothing explicit.  We  put them in context in class and they are dealt with in a sensitive manor.  If you have any concerns please contact me.

The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis 

​

Synopsis: An 11 year old girl who lives in Afghanistan during the Taliban rule in the 1990's must take care of her family after her father is taken away by the government.  She becomes the provider for her mother, sisters and brother in a society that makes it difficult to be a female.  She must find the courage to take on this new role and keep the faith that her family will be reunited.

Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly

​

Synopsis: Hidden Figures follows the true story of three African American women in the 1950's and 60's.  They are brilliant mathematicians who get hired at NASA around the same time.  The book covers the history of aviation and space exploration in America as well as the Civil Rights movement. 

​
